An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). It serves as an alternative to a Social Security Number (SSN) for individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but do not qualify for an SSN from the Social Security Administration.

Many migrants and refugees are obligated to use also SS; however, they can help them to pay for the cost to get an ITIN number.
